Interesting Lives: At Home with Isaac Mizrahi

“There’s only one way to be excellent at something. You have to practice. Having style is no different.”                                                            Isaac Mizrahi

In addition to being a two time CFDA winner and a Drama Desk Award winner fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi has also been a television presenter, talk show host, documentary film writer, stage director for an opera and costume designer.

I am always curious about how people such as Isaac, who utilize their talents to the fullest in their professional lives, will turn around to design their private lives. For example, will they take the same intensity and passion they use for their work and pour it into creating a comfortable, functional and very personal home for themselves?

“Style. All those who have it share one thing – originality.” – Diana Vreeland

A favorite perfume, a signature scent, carries with it the same impact and importance as the clothes we wear, how we design our homes and the way in which we live our lives. It is part of our personal style; a natural extension of who we are and what image we choose to project about ourselves to the outside world.

Now there is a new range of perfumes inspired by the great icon of personal style Diana Vreeland.

Proenza Schouler’s Textured Dress

image

I love the simple, elegant lines and the timeless symmetry of this dress. It offers refinement but with a healthy dose of sex appeal, and is perfect to wear going into spring and throughout the summer months. I also like that it hasn’t been styled with any jewelry. The dress itself makes a dramatic statement and doesn’t require any additional embellishment.

And not that they needed to do it, but in an effort to freshen their design sensibility Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler have borrowed a page from interior designers and embarked upon an intriguing way to make their fabrics stand above the crowd as much as their designs already do. More specifically, the dress pictured here (done in cotton crepe), from the Proenza Schouler spring 2014 collection, has been been painted with the type of roller brush similar to those you might utilize to paint the walls of your living room.

Said to have been inspired by Brazilian architect Sergio Rodrigues, the effect is that of a screen print and is applied to the material just prior to the dress being completely sewn together. The result is a pretty and highly unique texturized appearance. Wearable art, anyone?
