DV, Personal Style and the Parfums

“Style. All those who have it share one thing – originality.” – Diana Vreeland

A favorite perfume, a signature scent, carries with it the same impact and importance as the clothes we wear, how we design our homes and the way in which we live our lives. It is part of our personal style; a natural extension of who we are and what image we choose to project about ourselves to the outside world.

Now there is a new range of perfumes inspired by the great icon of personal style Diana Vreeland.

Musings on Slim

image Vacation. One of the most lyrical words in our language, at least for me. It’s something to be anticipated and coveted. A chance to break free from the mundane and ordinary and embark on new adventures and a new way of living, if only for a few days.

image

On Monday I leave for vacation and I’m nearly counting the hours. Let me be clear. My idea of a wonderful vacation involves nothing more complicated than sitting by a beach or pool soaking in the warmth of the sun. My inspirations are Slim Aarons’ iconic “Poolside” photographs.

image

It’s just a short short drive up the coast but a world away from the various pressures of real life. Vacation, are you ready for me? Because here I come!

Natalia

image

Natalia. The name conjurs images of a doe-eyed, ravishing woman who captivates our senses. Yes, she is beautiful and yes she lives what some might view as a life of glamor. But beyond the surface, beyond the camoflage  worn by every model there is a heart, a strong heart of a ferocious woman fighting for others far less fortunate and far more vulnerable, the children of Russia.

image

All across her homeland Natalia’s Naked Heart Foundation  has erected parks and playgrounds  providing laughter, joy and escape for children who sorely need all three. Her fame and her fortune were not enough for her. She had a deep seated desire to use both to do something, to make a difference in the lives of children.

image

Her story is inspiring. Read about Natalia in the September issue of Vanity Fair. I promise you will come away impressed with this remarkable young woman and her spirit of generosity and contribution.

Clare Boothe Luce

image

Because I am a woman, I must make unusual efforts to succeed. If I fail, no one will say, “She doesn’t have what it takes.” They will say, “Women don’t have what it takes.”    Clare Boothe Luce

Do you enjoy reading biographies? I do, and I can’t wait to dive into a new one that has just been released today. It’s entitled “Price of Fame“, and is the second and final installment of a biography of the Honorable Clare Boothe Luce by Sylvia Jukes Morris.

Proenza Schouler’s Textured Dress

image

I love the simple, elegant lines and the timeless symmetry of this dress. It offers refinement but with a healthy dose of sex appeal, and is perfect to wear going into spring and throughout the summer months. I also like that it hasn’t been styled with any jewelry. The dress itself makes a dramatic statement and doesn’t require any additional embellishment.

And not that they needed to do it, but in an effort to freshen their design sensibility Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler have borrowed a page from interior designers and embarked upon an intriguing way to make their fabrics stand above the crowd as much as their designs already do. More specifically, the dress pictured here (done in cotton crepe), from the Proenza Schouler spring 2014 collection, has been been painted with the type of roller brush similar to those you might utilize to paint the walls of your living room.

Said to have been inspired by Brazilian architect Sergio Rodrigues, the effect is that of a screen print and is applied to the material just prior to the dress being completely sewn together. The result is a pretty and highly unique texturized appearance. Wearable art, anyone?

Out for a Sail

image

I happened to be in Newport Beach this morning for an appointment and on my way home decided I’d like to take a slight detour through the lovely streets of Corona Del Mar. This photo was taken from the bluffs on Ocean Boulevard. It was a perfectly beautiful morning and some some lucky sailors had just taken to the water and were on their way out to sea.

Garance Dore and Rifle Paper Co.

image

One of my favorite indulgences has always been beautiful writing paper.

I can’t ever get enough of it and even if I have stacks of boxes waiting to be used I am still thrilled by a new brand, a new idea and image. So imagine my happiness when I learned that one of my favorite bloggers, the iconic Garance Dore, has teamed with Rifle Paper Company to create her very own line of paper goods.

image

Garance has designed and illustrated everything from assorted cards  as well as birthday cards, thank you notes, a 2015 calendar, note pads, iphone cases and much more.

image

Everything is as stylish, lighthearted and individual as she is!

Be sure to see Garance’s complete collection at Rifle Paper Company.

Kelly Behun and Decorating in White

 image

What do you think of the current trend toward using all white in decorating?

image

New York interior designer Kelly Behun decorated her 52nd floor midtown apartment completely white on white.

image

The plan behind this decision was to take advantage of the amazing panoramic views.

image

You can see more of Kelly’s apartment  here.

image

Kelly also used an all white palette when she decorated Ivanka Trump and Jarod Kushner’s Park Avenue penthouse.

imageSyrie Maugham (wife of author Somerset Maugham) was the first decorator to use white on white for her aristocratic clientele in the 1920s.

imageThe actress Jean Harlow was also one of her clients. Note the fringe on the chair. This was one of Syrie’s trademarks.

Syrie decorated Jean’s home and was also the set decorator for her movie “Dinner at Eight.” She used eleven shades of white to create contrast for this black and white film.

imageFor me white on white decorating is reminiscent of an elegant beach house. It is also relaxing and easy on the eyes and mind.

Below are a few more beautiful rooms by Kelly Behun.
